ABSTRACT

Xanthomas are lipid metabolism disorders that are clinically characterized by yellowish hard papules and plaques with accumulation of lipid-loaded histiocytes, often in the dermis or tendons. According to their clinical features, there are different subtypes such as xanthelasma, eruptive, tendinous, tuberous, palmar normolipidemic diffuse flat types, and different lipoprotein subtypes constitute different types of xanthomas. The type of xanthomas can provide important clues about the type of hyperlipoproteins, accompanying endocrinopathies and genetic diseases. Xanthomas should be considered as a clinical clue for clinicians in terms of early diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases, especially coronary artery disease.
