ABSTRACT

Background and Design:

Psoriasis is an immunoinflammatory skin disease which the etiopathogenesis is not yet clearly clarified. Causing factors in the etiopathogenesis of smoking and obesity are also can be esteemed. In this study, we aimed to research the association between psoriasis with smoking and obesity.

Material and Method:

In this study, between the dates July 2007-June 2008 at Ankara Numune Education & Research Hospital, the control group was formed and the outpatients aged 18 years and over 155 patients with psoriasis and 167 healthy people were investigated. In both patient and control groups; the age, Body Mass Index (BMI), smoking habits was recorded and the data analysis work had done. For the rest all patient group, in addition to the duration of disease; the family history, Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) was also both recorded and the data analysis work performed.

Results:

In the comparison of psoriasis patients with a control group, statistically a significant difference could not be found in terms of BMI. On the other hand, cases of psoriasis patients and the control group regarding the smoking association showed a significant difference. It was clarified that being smoked was increased PASI values. Compared to non-smokers, ex-smokers and regular smokers had an increased risk of the disease.

Conclusion:

A meaningful association between history of smoking and psoriasis was detected while there was no significant correlation with obesity and psoriasis.
