ABSTRACT

Objective:

To determine the types of HPV causing genital lesions and their association with recurrence after treatment.

Material and Methods:

83 patients treated for anogenital warts were included. Tissue samples were analyzed for presence of viral genome using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and HPV type was determined. The association of HPV type with factors such as age, sex, clinical appearance, number of sexual partners and presence of recurrence was analyzed.

Results:

HPV genome was detected in 59 tissue samples (71.1%). 52 of these (88.1%) were HPV type 6, 7 (11.9%) were HPV type 11. When the total duration of disease was taken into consideration, mean disease duration of patients with HPV 11 was longer than of patients with HPV 6 (p<0.001). When compared according to sex, age, number of sexual partners, clinical appearance and presence of recurrence, there was no significant difference between patients with HPV 6 and 11.

Conclusion:

The most frequently encountered types of HPV are 6 and 11 in anogenital warts.
